If you need access to a network drive, such as the "G" drive, this will help you get connected to it!
Background information:
- A Network Drive is a drive letter mapped to a network server share
- A Network server share is a folder on a server that is available for people to "share" files
- To map a network drive, you need three (maybe four) items:
- The server name
- The domain name and top-level domain (tld)
- the shared folder name
- (MAYBE) Your username and password
- The format of the share is as follows: \\servername.domainname.tld\sharename
- "\\" otherwise known as "whack whack" or "backslash backslash" tells the computer you want to access a network resource
- "servername" means the name of the server to which you want to connect
- "domainname" means what "domain" the server belongs for security control
- "tld" means Top Level Domain or TLD (.com .net .org for example)
- "sharename" is the name of the shared folder on the network
How to Map a Network Drive:
- Click on the folder icon on your taskbar
- Click on This PC
- Click on Map Network Drive from the ribbon bar at the top
- Choose a Drive Letter
- Enter the details for the share as provided by the IT Department
- Make sure Reconnect at sign-in is checked
- If that doesn't work you may need to enter alternate username and password by clicking connect with different credentials:
- Enter your alternate username and password (If you do not know contact IT):
You should now have access to the network drive!
