If you need access to a network drive, such as the "G" drive, this will help you get connected to it!

Background information:

  1. A Network Drive is a drive letter mapped to a network server share
  2. A Network server share is a folder on a server that is available for people to "share" files
  3. To map a network drive, you need three (maybe four) items:
    1. The server name
    2. The domain name and top-level domain (tld)
    3. the shared folder name
    4. (MAYBE) Your username and password
  4. The format of the share is as follows:  \\servername.domainname.tld\sharename
    1. "\\" otherwise known as "whack whack" or "backslash backslash" tells the computer you want to access a network resource
    2. "servername" means the name of the server to which you want to connect
    3. "domainname" means what "domain" the server belongs for security control
    4. "tld" means Top Level Domain or TLD (.com .net .org for example)

How to Map a Network Drive:

  • Click on This PC

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Click on Map Network Drive from the ribbon bar at the top

 

 

  • Choose a Drive Letter

 

 

  • Enter the details for the share as provided by the IT Department

 

  • Make sure Reconnect at sign-in is checked
